We are Designers

Designer is a broad term for a person who designs any of a variety of things. That usually implies the task of creating or of being creative in a particular area of expertise. It is frequently used to reference someone who draws or in some ways uses visual cues to organize their work. Designers are usually responsible for making a model that takes into consideration each step in a product’s development, including not only how a product will be used but also how it will be made. - Wikipedia the free encycolpedia.

I went to PenCity on Elizabeth street today and bought myself a moleskine! I figured that the trip to China was a good excuse to fork out the $30 that it cost (The most I have paid previously was about $10 for a spiral bound notebook from the local art store). Then I read DT’s article on “Fabbing: A Primer for Guerilla Design Strategies” and this started me thinking about what it is that makes us desigers and seperates us from everyone else?
What is it that defines us as Designer when there are many other out there who can also think creatively? Is it the Moleskine that is carried in the jacket pocket? Is it the degree that eithers hangs or will hang on our wall? Is it the fact that we choose give ourselves the label? If John Smith chooses to start calling himself a Designer, when he has none of the afore mentioned things who is there to say he is not?

Everyone is a designer in some way, afaic.

What I’d propose is that we forget the tag and concentrate on the work; let our work define us. After all, how many people now working as Industrial Designers want to be in the same position as today’s journalists? especially when there are people with knowledge and understanding in certain cases which exceeds those of the “professionals”?

    hi there,
i agree that everyone has a creative mind. “Designers” are those who use it more often, or in other words, in their jobs.
